How a small Queensland city took on London and New York and won!
June 2005: One of Queensland’s oldest cities, Maryborough (population 26,000) in Queensland, Australia set the original Guinness World record for most people on a pub crawl with 1,198 participants visiting its heritage hotels.
June 2006: The Heritage City broke its own record in June 2006 with 2,237 people visiting 10 pubs in six hours only to have officially snatched a few months later by London (population 7.5 million) - by just 41 people.
June 2007: With Aussie pride at stake they came from all over Australia to take part, with 2,758 offical crawlers helping beat the English at their own game (along with cricket, rugby and so on!).
June 2008: Maryborough made international history, with its fourth assault on the Guinness World Record for the largest ever pub crawl, successfully beating its own record with just over 3000 official crawlers taking part.
March 2009: New York challenged Maryborough's pub crawl crown and stole it briefly, setting a record 3,163 set on 14 March during the Annual Luck of The Irish St Patrick’s Pub Crawl. But it was to be but a fleeting taste of victory for the Big Apple.
June 2009: 4718 official participants took part in Maryborough's World's Greatest Pub Crawl and handed in their pub crawl cards to be counted ( although conservative estimates put the number of people “crawling” around the city’s historic pubs at closer to 10,000).
February 2010: Guinness World Records confirms Maryborough has officially trumped New York’s world record attempt for “Most people on a pub crawl” and welcomed the city to an elite membership of World Record holders.
June 13, 2010: Maryborough retained its record but just missed out on setting a new World Record with 4122 official participants handing in their cards at the end of the day for the count.
June 12, 2011: Maryborough attempts its seventh assault! With over 10,000 who crawled for a cause we missed out on smashing another record with just over 3,000 cards being handed in.
June 10, 2012: Maryborough will once again host this old fashioned hotel hop with the focus on raising $10,000 towards this year's charity - Give Me 5 For Kids.
